Excursion Description (Full-day trip)
A quarter of all Egyptians live in Cairo, around 20 million people, making it the largest city in Africa. The official name of the city is Al-Kahira, which means “the conqueror”. This name was given because many armies throughout history have attempted to conquer the city, and its defenders would destroy them (more famous conquerors were the Mongols, Crusaders, and Ottomans).
The city stands on the banks of the Nile, in an area where it flows out of the desert valley and extends into the delta (which is at the top of the delta). It is located about 100 km south of the Mediterranean Sea and 120 km west of the Gulf of Suez. A vast area with satellite settlements stretches along both banks of the river, while Cairo, within its administrative boundaries, is limited to the right bank and two river islands, covering an area of 453 km².
Some of the city’s landmarks: the National Museum, the Pyramids and Sphinx, Tahrir Square, Old Cairo, the City of the Dead, the Citadel, the Mosque of Mohammed Ali, the Step Pyramid, and Memphis.
